Sir:-
I am directed by the Marquess of Salisbury to
acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 16th
instant stating that the Government of Hong Kong
has decided to become a party to the Venice Sanitary
Convention of 1897 and inclosing a copy of the Quar-
antine Regulations of the Colony.
I am to observe that the various periods of time
stated in the Regulations are those required by the
Convention and that therefore the other parties to
the Convention can have no fault to find with them
in this particular,
These Regulations however apply to Cholera,
smallpox, and certain other diseases, whereas in the
recent Sanitary Conventions the different periods
vary according to the period of incubation of the
disease concerned, and the period of incubation of
plague
Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
